c.1958 Linemar, Mechanical Joe the Xylophone Player in Original Box
Lithographed tinplate mechanical Joe the Xylophone Player manufactured by Linemar. An identical toy was also produced by T.P.S. The only difference is the trademark. Both are scarce and tough to find in good working condition. This example conservatively grades near mint and comes complete with its original Linemar box. The toy consists of a large standing, obese clown with attached connected to a four-bell table top xylophone. The belly is all round with the exception of a shallow factory made dimple just above the center waist. He's all tin litho, wearing a flocked, fabric black tuxedo with gold lapels and pink bow tie. The "sticks" are coiled springs with red plastic beads on the ends. It swivels at the hips twisting alternately right and left. Simultaneously the arms quickly raise alternately up and down. The figure's head and neck are loose and connected internally to the movement of the arms. The head is also weighted so that it leans forward. These actions, combined with the relaxed facial features, give the impression of an experienced musician working his craft. Everything works beautifully! The Linemar logo and "Japan" were lithoed on the back of the left leg. The triangular color illustrated box has a large, fold-down die-cut flap with Joe on the front. The Linemar logo and "Best By Far" motto were printed at the bottom. Two short inner flaps prevent the front from collapsing inside the box. Two more illustrations on the sides of the box show Joe and the entire orchestra including a seal, elephant, and monkey. A fourth drawing on the top of the box is a better representation of the actual toy. The box bottom is red, white, and blue striping. The back is blank.
